What is an antenna?

An antenna is a transducer between guided electrical signals and free-space electromagnetic waves. When alternating current flows in a conductor, it launches radio waves; the same structure reciprocally turns incoming waves back into current. The half-wave dipole is the canonical starting point for understanding this behavior.
