Choosing the right antenna
There is no single ‘best’ antenna — only the best one for your goal, band, and space.
Start with the question
- Talk in every direction on HF? A dipole or vertical.
- Work weak DX in one direction? A Yagi or quad beam.
- Omnidirectional VHF/UHF base? A ground-plane or collinear vertical.
- Severe space limits? A magnetic loop or end-fed wire.
Weigh the constraints
Every choice trades among gain, bandwidth, size, and complexity. A big beam wins contacts but needs a tower and rotator; a stealthy loop fits a balcony but is narrowband and fiddly.
Height beats almost everything
For most antennas, getting it higher and in the clear improves results more than any clever design. Optimise placement before chasing exotic antennas.
